Terrific writing and insight. You have always had an amazing gift for capturing many complex observations and emotions in a clear and simple way. Unlike your older brother:)

I love the metaphor of the roots digging deep as following one's bliss.

Thank you for your wisdom.

Loved the metaphor of the fruit/vines. To follow your bliss is no simple thing but even if you fail in this the attempt to do so is a reward in itself. Thank You for your words.

Dr. Chu, thank you for a very inspiring piece that resonated deeply in me. I happened to stumble across your website because I am currently searching within myself in regards to my own life path. Let me start by mentioning that I typically don't respond to blogs that I read, however something compelled me to reply. I truly appreciate your words when you write about your parents and how they steered you away from making a life dependent on music. As I was reading your post, I felt very inspired that you went against the grain and stayed true to yourself. I also appreciate that you understand where your parents were coming from. I have had a similar experience growing up when my parents always stressed being practical in making a career choice. They've always pushed for me to go in to medicine, or engineering, or something to do with computers because that's where the money was; that's where stability could be found. Well, I feel being true to myself means working for myself as well as somewhere in the arts. In my case, I feel my place is in music. I love music. Currently I work for a major music publisher and although it's in the realm of music, it's a corporate environment that doesn't nourish my true self. Thanks to your post I'm moving closer to that point of fulfilling my dream of learning the drums and hopefully leaving the 9 to 5 world. The drums is an instrument I've dreamed of playing since I was in the fourth grade. Soon I will take the leap and find a teacher that will guide me to my dream of becoming a jazz drummer. Then one day I can teach children or adults music and finally leave the corporate world behind. Thank you again.

Thank you for the reminder to tune into the body's wisdom. I believe we have a marvelously wonderful system which is self correcting. The only problem is that we override the system by ignoring the signs or taking out the light bulbs and thinking the problem is solved.

Recently I have been going through the similar realization and I have started taking care of myself a little better by walking and stretching beyond my comfort zone, and all the while letting the body direct the pace.
